NSCLC: Sen. Brown Highlights SSI Restoration Act During Hearing on Future of Social Security

From our colleagues at NSCLC:

In opening remarks to the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy on May 21, 2014, Chair Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) advocated “modernizing the Supplemental Security Income program.

“If there is one area on Social Security where every Senator on this Committee should agree, it’s in modernizing SSI – a modest supplemental benefit {for} elderly, blind and disabled people with little other income,” Sen. Brown said. “Strict eligibility requirements were put in place at the inception a long time ago. This made sense but now those requirements, because they have not been updated, need certainly better examination.”

Brown cosponsored the SSI Restorarion Act (S.2089), a bill championed by NSCLC, which would address these requirements and other issues. The hearing was entitled “Strengthening Social Security to Meet the Needs of Tomorrow’s Retirees.”  You can find out more about the bill and SSI on our website.
