Getting Started with Advocacy
Advocacy involves talking with elected officials and telling them what you think about issues that you care about. To determine your State Senator and State Assembly Member’s name, address and phone number:
- Go on-line to: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html and enter your zip code; or
- Call Project Vote Smart: (866) 868-3762, give them your 9 digit zip code (5 digit plus 4)
Make sure to write their name, address, and number down so that you can contact them again and again. Put the information on your refrigerator or somewhere it will be easy to find.
Now you can call them or write them about other issues, request a meeting, and get on their mailing list which will keep you informed about what they are doing.
Getting their contact information is the first step to advocating for yourself and your issues. Don’t be afraid to call your elected officials. They need to know what you think.
